The TOOL HOLDER is a clamping device that is designed to to pick-up and hold machine tools. It is an important link between the machine spindle and the cutting tool.
The primary task is to transfer the machining forces quickly, safely and exactly.

Most common types of CLAMPING SYSTEMS at a glance.
(1) Morse Taper | MT
The morse taper is a self-locking cone. The torque transmission from the hollow cone (sleeve) of the driven tool spindle to the clamping shaft of the tool is based on static friction. It is a so called frictional connection.
Morse tapers are standardized according to DIN 228. They are available in 7 sizes (MT 0 to MT 6) with shank diameters of up to 63 mm.
(2) Steep Taper | SK
The steep taper (SK) is a standardized shape for clamping tools in the spindle of the machine. This traditional interface distinguishes itself through an extremely robust design. It is a so called positive connection.
No self-locking allows an easy tool change. This is especially advantageous for an automatic tool change. Further advantages are small take-up lengths, thus short clamping times. And high torsional stiffness due to its small construction length.
The tool holder is pulled in the spindle with the help of an additional pull stud. The centering takes place via the taper contact. This system is primarily suitable for applications with a spindle speed of up to 12.000 rpm.
(3) Hollow Taper Shank | HSK
The hollow taper shank (HSK) is the newest development of the steep taper. The holder is clamped via ist taper with flange contact surface. By doing so, a highly accurate centring and fixed axial position of the holder in the spindle is granted with a high repetitive accuracy when exchanging the tools.
This system is suitable for applications with a spindle speed up to 35.000 rpm. It is mainly used in high-speed machining.
(4) Polygonal Taper Shank | PSC
This type of polygonal interface is an innovative tooling system with maximum precision and particularly widespread in multi-task machines. The polygonal taper shank (PSC) is standardised according to ISO 26623.
The torque transmission and centring takes place via the polygon-shaped taper with flange surface contact. As a result, a fixed axial positioning and a high degree of torsional rigidity is achieved.
